Vertical flow technologies are membrane-based immunoassays in which samples and reagents flow vertically through a porous supportive membrane. While both vertical flow and lateral flow assays utilize specific antigen–antibody interactions for analyte detection, the assay architectures, fluid dynamics, and detection workflows differ significantly.
In vertical flow technologies, samples and reagents pass directly through the membrane rather than migrating laterally across it. This design offers several advantages over conventional lateral flow assays, including faster reaction kinetics, reduced assay times (typically less than 1 minutes), greater flexibility in assay design, and the ability to process larger sample volumes. These characteristics can contribute to improved analytical performance, particularly when testing complex biological specimens.
Vertical flow immunoassays can be used for rapid detection of antibodies and/or antigen(s) in a sample of interest. Samples can come from a wide range of application areas such as clinical, veterinary, agricultural, food, bio-defence and environmental industries. Detection sensitivity is generally in the lower nanogram per ml range even in complex sample matrices.
